Definition
Let be a commutative ring, let , and let be a matrix over . Assume that is alternating: and for all . Let be the set of perfect matchings of , that is, partitions into pairs. Write as with , and let be the permutation . The Pfaffian of is where is the sign of a permutation.
Remarks
The term of does not depend on the order in which the pairs are listed, because exchanging two pairs is an even permutation. For an alternating matrix of odd size, the Pfaffian is set to .
Example: for there are three matchings, and For the matching , the permutation is , a transposition, so its sign is .
Non-example: the symmetric matrix is not alternating, because unless in , so it has no Pfaffian in this sense.
The main facts are and for every matrix , where is the determinant. Alternating matrices over a field are the same as skew-symmetric matrices when the characteristic is not .
