Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, ℏ>0\hbar > 0, and let HH be a quantum Hamiltonian on L2(ℝn)L^2(\R^n) with Weyl symbol h(x,p)h(x, p) on the phase space ℝ2n\R^{2n}. The phase space formulation of the quantum system is the following description of it by functions on ℝ2n\R^{2n}:

  1. a state, given by a density operator ρ\rho, is represented by its Wigner function Wρ(x,p)W_\rho(x, p);
  2. an observable AA is represented by its Weyl symbol aa, so that A=Opw(a)A = \mathrm{Op}^w(a);
  3. the expectation value of AA in the state ρ\rho is ⟨A⟩ρ=∫ℝ2na Wρ dx dp\langle A \rangle_\rho = \int_{\R^{2n}} a\, W_\rho\, dx\, dp;
  4. the product of observables Opw(a)Opw(b)\mathrm{Op}^w(a)\mathrm{Op}^w(b) is represented by the Moyal product a⋆ba \star b;
  5. the time evolution of the state is given by the Moyal equation ∂W∂t=1iℏ(h⋆W−W⋆h).\frac{\partial W}{\partial t} = \frac{1}{i\hbar}\left(h \star W - W \star h\right).

Remarks

Clause 5 is the translation of the von Neumann equation iℏ ∂tρ=[H,ρ]i\hbar\, \partial_t \rho = [H, \rho], because WρW_\rho is (2πℏ)−n(2\pi\hbar)^{-n} times the Weyl symbol of ρ\rho. Since h⋆W−W⋆h=iℏ{h,W}+O(ℏ3)h \star W - W \star h = i\hbar\{h, W\} + O(\hbar^3), the equation reduces to the classical Liouville equation ∂tW={h,W}\partial_t W = \{h, W\} up to terms of order ℏ2\hbar^2.

Example: for the harmonic oscillator h=p22m+mω2x22h = \frac{p^2}{2m} + \frac{m\omega^2 x^2}{2}, all terms of order ℏ2\hbar^2 and higher vanish, because hh is quadratic. So ∂tW={h,W}\partial_t W = \{h, W\} exactly, and WW is transported along the classical elliptical orbits.

Non-example: a general probability density f(x,p)f(x, p) on ℝ2n\R^{2n} need not be the Wigner function of any state. For instance, a Gaussian f=1πεe−(x2+p2)/εf = \frac{1}{\pi\varepsilon} e^{-(x^2 + p^2)/\varepsilon} with n=1n = 1 and ε<ℏ\varepsilon < \hbar violates the bound ∣W∣≤1/(πℏ)\abs{W} \le 1/(\pi\hbar) at the origin.
