Phase velocity

Builds on Plane waveDispersion relation

Definition

Let u(x,t)=acos⁡(k⋅x−ωt+ϕ)u(x, t) = a \cos(k \cdot x - \omega t + \phi) be a sinusoidal plane wave in ℝd\R^d with wave vector k≠0k \neq 0 and angular frequency ω\omega. Its phase velocity is the vector vp=ω∣k∣ k∣k∣,v_p = \frac{\omega}{\abs{k}} \, \frac{k}{\abs{k}}, and its phase speed is ω/∣k∣\omega / \abs{k}. For a wave equation with dispersion relation ω=W(k)\omega = W(k), the phase velocity at the wave vector kk is W(k)k/∣k∣2W(k) k / \abs{k}^2.

Remarks

The set where the phase k⋅x−ωt+ϕk \cdot x - \omega t + \phi has a fixed value is a plane that moves along k/∣k∣k / \abs{k} with speed ω/∣k∣\omega / \abs{k}; this is what the definition measures. In a medium with refractive index n(ω)n(\omega), the dispersion relation ∣k∣=n(ω)ω/c\abs{k} = n(\omega) \omega / c gives the phase speed c/n(ω)c / n(\omega).

Example: for u(x,t)=cos⁡(2x−6t)u(x, t) = \cos(2x - 6t) in one dimension, k=2k = 2 and ω=6\omega = 6, so vp=3v_p = 3; indeed u(x+3s,t+s)=u(x,t)u(x + 3s, t + s) = u(x, t) for all ss.

Non-example: the speed of a crest is not k/ωk / \omega: for the same wave, k/ω=1/3k/\omega = 1/3, and u(x+s/3,t+s)=cos⁡(2x−6t−163s)u(x + s/3, t + s) = \cos(2x - 6t - \tfrac{16}{3} s), which changes with ss.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
