Photon sphere
Summary
A photon sphere is a sphere around a compact mass on which light can travel in circular orbits. For the Schwarzschild metric of mass it is the sphere , one and a half times the Schwarzschild radius. The circular light orbits there are unstable, and they shape the dark shadow that a black hole casts on a bright background.
