Builds on Ricci curvature

Example

Fix a mass parameter m>0m > 0, in units where the gravitational constant and the speed of light are 11. On M=ℝ×(2m,∞)×S2M = \R \times (2m, \infty) \times S^2 with coordinates (t,r,θ,ϕ)(t, r, \theta, \phi), the Schwarzschild metric is g=−(1−2mr)dt2+(1−2mr)−1dr2+r2(dθ2+sin⁡2θ dϕ2).g = -\left(1 - \frac{2m}{r}\right) dt^2 + \left(1 - \frac{2m}{r}\right)^{-1} dr^2 + r^2 \left(d\theta^2 + \sin^2\theta \, d\phi^2\right). Check that (M,g)(M, g) is a Lorentzian manifold: for r>2mr > 2m the number 1−2m/r1 - 2m/r is positive. So the coefficient of dt2dt^2 is negative and the coefficient of dr2dr^2 is positive. The last term is r2r^2 times the round metric of S2S^2, which is positive definite. Hence gg has signature (−,+,+,+)(-, +, +, +) at every point. A direct computation of the Christoffel symbols shows that the Ricci curvature of gg is zero, so gg solves the vacuum Einstein equations. It is static and spherically symmetric, and gg tends to the Minkowski metric as r→∞r \to \infty.

The slice t=0t = 0 carries the Riemannian metric (1−2m/r)−1dr2+r2(dθ2+sin⁡2θ dϕ2)(1 - 2m/r)^{-1} dr^2 + r^2 (d\theta^2 + \sin^2\theta\, d\phi^2), the spatial Schwarzschild metric. It has zero scalar curvature, and in the coordinate rr extended to r≥2mr \ge 2m its boundary sphere r=2mr = 2m is a minimal surface of area 16πm216\pi m^2.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
