statement theorem

Pigeonhole principle

Statement

Let AA and BB be finite sets with ∣A∣>∣B∣|A| > |B|, and let f:A→Bf : A \to B be a function. Then there are elements a≠a′a \neq a' of AA with f(a)=f(a′)f(a) = f(a'). In other words, ff is not injective.

Remarks

In the usual image, if n+1n + 1 pigeons sit in nn holes, then some hole has at least two pigeons. Example: among any 1313 people, two have their birthdays in the same month. The generalized pigeonhole principle gives a fibre with more than nn elements. The infinite pigeonhole principle is a version for infinite sets.

Explanations

L1 human

If there are more objects than boxes, some box has two objects. For example, in any group of 367 people, two share a birthday, because a year has at most 366 days.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Cardinality of a finite set definition
  2. Pigeonhole principle statement

What depends on this

3 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
