Statement

Let AA be a C*-algebra and let α\alpha be an automorphism of AA. Let A⋊αℤA \rtimes_\alpha \Z be the crossed product of AA by the action n↦αnn \mapsto \alpha^n of ℤ\Z. Let ι ⁣:A→A⋊αℤ\iota \colon A \to A \rtimes_\alpha \Z be the canonical inclusion and α∗\alpha_* the map induced by α\alpha on K0 and K1. Then there are homomorphisms δ0 ⁣:K0(A⋊αℤ)→K1(A)\delta_0 \colon K_0(A \rtimes_\alpha \Z) \to K_1(A) and δ1 ⁣:K1(A⋊αℤ)→K0(A)\delta_1 \colon K_1(A \rtimes_\alpha \Z) \to K_0(A) such that the cyclic diagram

K0(A)→id⁡−α∗K0(A)→ι∗K0(A⋊αℤ)↑δ1↓δ0K1(A⋊αℤ)←ι∗K1(A)←id⁡−α∗K1(A)\begin{array}{ccccc} K_0(A) & \xrightarrow{\id - \alpha_*} & K_0(A) & \xrightarrow{\iota_*} & K_0(A \rtimes_\alpha \Z) \\ \uparrow{\scriptstyle \delta_1} & & & & \downarrow{\scriptstyle \delta_0} \\ K_1(A \rtimes_\alpha \Z) & \xleftarrow{\iota_*} & K_1(A) & \xleftarrow{\id - \alpha_*} & K_1(A) \end{array}

is exact at each of its six groups.

Remarks

Pimsner and Voiculescu proved it with a Toeplitz-type algebra 𝒯α\mathcal{T}_\alpha that fits into an extension 0→A⊗𝒦→𝒯α→A⋊αℤ→00 \to A \otimes \mathcal{K} \to \mathcal{T}_\alpha \to A \rtimes_\alpha \Z \to 0. The main step shows that the inclusion A→𝒯αA \to \mathcal{T}_\alpha is an isomorphism on K-theory, and the six-term exact sequence of the extension then becomes the sequence above. Example: for A=C(𝕋)A = C(\mathbb{T}) and α\alpha the rotation by an angle 2πθ2 \pi \theta, the rotation is homotopic to the identity, so α∗=id⁡\alpha_* = \id and id⁡−α∗=0\id - \alpha_* = 0. The sequence then splits into short exact sequences 0→Ki(C(𝕋))→Ki(Aθ)→K1−i(C(𝕋))→00 \to K_i(C(\mathbb{T})) \to K_i(A_\theta) \to K_{1-i}(C(\mathbb{T})) \to 0, which give K0(Aθ)≅K1(Aθ)≅ℤ2K_0(A_\theta) \cong K_1(A_\theta) \cong \Z^2 for the noncommutative torus AθA_\theta. For the trivial automorphism, A⋊ℤ≅A⊗C(𝕋)A \rtimes \Z \cong A \otimes C(\mathbb{T}), and the sequence gives short exact sequences 0→Ki(A)→Ki(A⊗C(𝕋))→K1−i(A)→00 \to K_i(A) \to K_i(A \otimes C(\mathbb{T})) \to K_{1-i}(A) \to 0.

For a student

Together with the Connes–Thom isomorphism for actions of ℝ\R, it is the basic tool for crossed products. Classical applications are the K-theory of the irrational rotation algebras and their embedding into AF algebras. It also gives the K-theory of the Cuntz algebras through a crossed product description.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
