Plane strain

Definition
Let be a displacement field on a region of in infinitesimal strain theory, and let be its strain tensor. Let be Cartesian coordinates. The field is in plane strain with respect to the -plane if it has the form Then , and the other components depend only on and .
Remarks
Example: the shear is in plane strain, with as its only nonzero strain component.
Non-example: for an isotropic material with Poisson's ratio , uniaxial stress along produces the strain , so this state is not in plane strain with respect to the -plane.
For an isotropic linear elastic material in plane strain, the out-of-plane stress is , which is not zero in general. The in-plane equations of plane strain have the same form as those of plane stress, with the elastic constants changed: is replaced by and by .
