Plane wave
Builds on Wave equation
Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional real or complex vector space, for example , or , and let be a unit vector. A plane wave with direction is a function of the form for some function . It is a travelling plane wave with speed if for some function . It is a sinusoidal plane wave if for some constants of the following kind. Here is the amplitude, the wave vector, the angular frequency and the phase.
Remarks
The planes are the wavefronts. A sinusoidal plane wave is travelling with speed when ; its wavelength is . Complex notation , with complex amplitude , is standard. Every twice differentiable travelling plane wave solves the wave equation , since both sides equal .
Example: is a sinusoidal plane wave with direction , wave vector and ; it travels with speed .
Non-example: the spherical wave on is not a plane wave. At its values at and differ, though both points lie on the plane . Similar pairs exist for every direction .
