Poincaré recurrence theorem

Builds on Measure-preserving transformationFinite measureAlmost everywhere

Statement

Let (X,𝒜,μ)(X, \mathcal{A}, \mu) be a measure space with μ(X)<∞\mu(X) < \infty, that is, a finite measure space. Let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X be a measure-preserving transformation, and let A∈𝒜A \in \mathcal{A}. Then for almost every x∈Ax \in A, the point Tk(x)T^k(x) lies in AA for infinitely many integers k≥1k \ge 1.

Remarks

Let BB be the set of points of AA that never return to AA, so B=A∖⋃k≥1T−k(A)B = A \setminus \bigcup_{k \ge 1} T^{-k}(A). The sets B,T−1(B),T−2(B),…B, T^{-1}(B), T^{-2}(B), \dots are pairwise disjoint and all have measure μ(B)\mu(B). Since their total measure is at most μ(X)<∞\mu(X) < \infty, one gets μ(B)=0\mu(B) = 0. Applying this to TmT^m for each m≥1m \ge 1 shows that almost every point of AA returns infinitely often. The hypothesis μ(X)<∞\mu(X) < \infty is needed: the translation T(x)=x+1T(x) = x + 1 on ℝ\R preserves Lebesgue measure, but no point of A=[0,1)A = [0,1) ever returns to AA. Example: for an irrational rotation of the circle and an arc AA of positive length, every point of AA comes back to AA infinitely often.

For a student

The theorem uses only finiteness of the measure and invariance, not any mixing property. It is the starting point of recurrence in ergodic theory, which leads to multiple recurrence and Furstenberg's proof of Szemerédi's theorem. For infinite measures, the maps for which the conclusion holds are called conservative, and the Mathlib form of the theorem is stated for conservative maps.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
