Point spectrum
Builds on Spectrum of an operatorEigenvalueKernel of a linear map
Definition
Let be a complex Banach space with identity map , and let be a bounded operator. The point spectrum of is the set the set of eigenvalues of .
Remarks
Here is the kernel. The point spectrum is a subset of the spectrum , and for the two are equal.
Example: let be the left shift on . For , the vector is in and , so . Conversely forces , so , which is in with only if ; thus is the open unit disc.
Non-example: for the diagonal operator on , but , since forces .
The point spectrum need not be closed, and it can be empty, as for the right shift on .
