Definition
A frame is a complete lattice such that for every and every family in . A frame homomorphism is a map between frames that preserves finite meets, including the top element, and arbitrary joins, including the bottom element. The category of locales is the opposite of the category of frames and frame homomorphisms. Pointless topology is the study of locales. Each topological space gives the locale , the frame of open sets of ordered by inclusion. Each continuous map gives the frame homomorphism , hence a locale map .
Remarks
Example: for , the open sets form a frame, because for open sets .
Non-example: the lattice of subspaces of is complete but not a frame; for three distinct lines through , while .
A point of a locale is a frame homomorphism ; a locale is spatial if it is isomorphic to for some space .
The functor restricts to an equivalence between sober spaces and spatial locales.
Every frame is a complete Heyting algebra; Mathlib calls frames Order.Frame.
