Poisson bracket
Definition
Let be a symplectic manifold. For a smooth function , let be its Hamiltonian vector field, so . The Poisson bracket of smooth functions is the smooth function
Remarks
Equivalently . The bracket is bilinear and antisymmetric, satisfies the Leibniz rule , and satisfies the Jacobi identity because . With these conventions .
Example: on with , For instance , so , while .
Non-example: on the closed -form is degenerate, so it does not define a bracket in this way: the function has no Hamiltonian vector field for it.
Along an integral curve of , a function satisfies . Some authors use the opposite sign convention for .
