Pólya enumeration theorem

Builds on Group actionOrbitDecomposition of a permutation into disjoint cycles

Statement

Let GG be a finite group that acts on a finite set XX with ∣X∣=d\abs{X} = d. For g∈Gg \in G and 1≤j≤d1 \le j \le d, let cj(g)c_j(g) be the number of cycles of length jj of the permutation x↦gxx \mapsto g x of XX. The cycle index of the action is the polynomial ZG(t1,…,td)=1∣G∣∑g∈Gt1c1(g)t2c2(g)⋯tdcd(g).Z_G(t_1, \ldots, t_d) = \frac{1}{\abs{G}} \sum_{g \in G} t_1^{c_1(g)} t_2^{c_2(g)} \cdots t_d^{c_d(g)}. Let CC be a finite set of colours, and let GG act on the set CXC^X of maps f ⁣:X→Cf \colon X \to C by (gf)(x)=f(g−1x)(g f)(x) = f(g^{-1} x).

  1. The number of orbits of GG on CXC^X is ZG(m,m,…,m)Z_G(m, m, \ldots, m), where m=∣C∣m = \abs{C}.
  2. Treat the colours c∈Cc \in C as commuting variables, and give ff the weight ∏x∈Xf(x)\prod_{x \in X} f(x), which is constant on orbits. Then the sum of the weights of the orbits is ZG(p1,p2,…,pd)Z_G(p_1, p_2, \ldots, p_d) with pj=∑c∈Ccjp_j = \sum_{c \in C} c^j.

Remarks

Proof idea: by Burnside's lemma, the number of orbits is the average number of colourings fixed by an element gg. A colouring is fixed by gg exactly when it is constant on each cycle of gg, so gg fixes mc1(g)+⋯+cd(g)m^{c_1(g) + \cdots + c_d(g)} colourings. The weighted form follows from a weighted Burnside lemma in the same way, since a cycle of length jj with colour cc contributes cjc^j.

Example: colour the 44 beads of a necklace black or white, up to rotation. The rotation group C4C_4 has cycle index 14(t14+t22+2t4)\frac{1}{4}(t_1^4 + t_2^2 + 2 t_4). With m=2m = 2 this gives 14(16+4+4)=6\frac{1}{4}(16 + 4 + 4) = 6 necklaces. With colours bb and ww, the weighted form gives b4+b3w+2b2w2+bw3+w4b^4 + b^3 w + 2 b^2 w^2 + b w^3 + w^4, so 22 of the necklaces have two beads of each colour.

The group acts on the positions XX, not on the colours. If one also allows permutations of the colours, the count changes, and the theorem has to be replaced by a version for the product group.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem refines Burnside's lemma by keeping track of how many times each colour is used. It counts unlabelled structures, such as isomorphism classes of graphs or chemical isomers, by letting the symmetric group act on positions. In the symbolic method, the multiset and cycle constructions for unlabelled classes are instances of the same idea. The cycle index of the symmetric group SdS_d acting on dd points is ∑λpλ/zλ\sum_{\lambda} p_\lambda / z_\lambda, a sum over the partitions λ\lambda of dd. Here pλ=∏jtjmjp_\lambda = \prod_j t_j^{m_j} and zλ=∏jjmjmj!z_\lambda = \prod_j j^{m_j} m_j!, where mjm_j is the number of parts of λ\lambda equal to jj. With tjt_j read as power sums, this links the theorem to symmetric functions.
