Statement

Let d≥1d \ge 1 and let (Sn)n≥0(S_n)_{n \ge 0} be the simple random walk on ℤd\Z^d with S0=0S_0 = 0: its steps are independent and uniform on the 2d2d vectors ±e1,…,±ed\pm e_1, \ldots, \pm e_d.

  1. If d=1d = 1 or d=2d = 2, then P(Sn=0 for some n≥1)=1P(S_n = 0 \text{ for some } n \ge 1) = 1.
  2. If d≥3d \ge 3, then P(Sn=0 for some n≥1)<1P(S_n = 0 \text{ for some } n \ge 1) < 1.

Remarks

The walk is a Markov chain, and the origin is recurrent if and only if ∑nP(S2n=0)=∞\sum_{n} P(S_{2n} = 0) = \infty. For d=1d = 1, P(S2n=0)=(2nn)4−nP(S_{2n} = 0) = \binom{2n}{n} 4^{-n}, which behaves like (πn)−1/2(\pi n)^{-1/2}. For d=2d = 2, P(S2n=0)=((2nn)4−n)2P(S_{2n} = 0) = \left(\binom{2n}{n} 4^{-n}\right)^2, which behaves like (πn)−1(\pi n)^{-1}, so the sum still diverges. For general dd, P(S2n=0)P(S_{2n} = 0) is of order n−d/2n^{-d/2}, and the sum converges for d≥3d \ge 3. In dimension 33, the probability of return is about 0.340.34. In dimensions 11 and 22 the walk returns infinitely often, and in dimension d≥3d \ge 3 it satisfies ∣Sn∣→∞\abs{S_n} \to \infty almost surely.

Going deeper

For a student

The proof reduces recurrence to the divergence of the expected number of returns, which local limit estimates for P(S2n=0)P(S_{2n} = 0) settle. Another proof views the lattice as an electrical network: the walk is recurrent if and only if the effective resistance from the origin to infinity is infinite. The same dichotomy between d≤2d \le 2 and d≥3d \ge 3 appears for Brownian motion, which is neighbourhood recurrent in the plane and transient in ℝ3\R^3.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
