Polynomial hierarchy
Builds on PNPco-NPOracle machine
Definition
Let . Let be a polynomial, and let be a language in P whose elements are -tuples of strings. A language is in if, for some such and and for all , Here each ranges over strings of length at most . The quantifiers alternate, so is for odd and for even . The class is the class of complements of languages in . Set . The polynomial hierarchy is
Remarks
The first level is and . Example: the set of propositional formulas such that some assignment of makes true for every assignment of is in . Take , , and let be the set of triples with true, which is in P.
Non-example: the number of quantifier blocks is fixed for each language in PH. The true quantified Boolean formula problem allows any number of alternations, and it is not known to be in PH. If it were in , then PSPACE would equal and the hierarchy would collapse to level .
With oracle machines the levels can also be written , and one sets . Then . If for some , then .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
