Definition

Let nn be a real number. A quasistatic process of a fluid with pressure pp and volume VV is polytropic with index nn if pVnp V^n is constant along the process.

Remarks

For an ideal gas with constant heat capacity ratio γ\gamma, the special cases are as follows. The index n=0n = 0 gives an isobaric process. The index n=1n = 1 gives an isothermal process, since a constant product pVpV means a constant temperature for an ideal gas. The index n=γn = \gamma gives a reversible adiabatic, hence isentropic, process. In the limit n→∞n \to \infty one gets an isochoric process. For n≠1n \ne 1, the work done by the fluid from (p1,V1)(p_1, V_1) to (p2,V2)(p_2, V_2) is (p1V1−p2V2)/(n−1)(p_1 V_1 - p_2 V_2) / (n - 1). A process with p=a+bVp = a + bV for constants a,b≠0a, b \ne 0 is not polytropic, since pVnp V^n is not constant along it for any nn.
