Definition
Let be a real vector bundle of rank over a paracompact space . Let be its complexification, the complex vector bundle of rank with fibers . For , the -th Pontryagin class of is where is the -th Chern class. The total Pontryagin class is .
Remarks
The odd Chern classes of satisfy , because is isomorphic to its complex conjugate; this is why only the even ones are used. Pontryagin classes are natural, so they are characteristic classes, and for , that is, for . The Whitney sum formula holds modulo -torsion: .
Example: for the complex projective space with generator , the tangent bundle has . For this gives .
Non-example: Pontryagin classes do not detect every nontrivial bundle. The Möbius line bundle over is not trivial, but lies in , so all its Pontryagin classes beyond vanish.
For a smooth manifold , .
