Definition
Let be the Hilbert space of a particle on the line. The position operator is the operator with domain given by . In , the position operators on are defined in the same way with in place of .
Remarks
is an unbounded self-adjoint operator, so it is an observable. It is the unbounded analogue of a multiplication operator. Its spectrum is , and it has no eigenvalues, since almost everywhere forces almost everywhere. Its projection-valued measure is , so the probability that the position lies in is .
Example: lies in , since . Its expectation value is .
Non-example: is a unit vector of , but , so .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
