Definition

Let AA be a C*-algebra. For a∈Aa \in A, let σ(a)\sigma(a) be its spectrum, computed in the unitization of AA when AA has no unit. An element a∈Aa \in A is positive, written a≥0a \ge 0, if

  1. aa is self-adjoint, that is, a∗=aa^* = a, and
  2. σ(a)⊆[0,∞)\sigma(a) \subseteq [0, \infty).

Remarks

The following are equivalent for a∈Aa \in A: aa is positive; a=b∗ba = b^* b for some b∈Ab \in A; a=c2a = c^2 for some self-adjoint c∈Ac \in A. The positive elements form a closed convex cone A+A_+ with A+∩(−A+)={0}A_+ \cap (-A_+) = \set{0}. For self-adjoint a,ba, b one writes a≤ba \le b when b−a≥0b - a \ge 0.

Example: in C(X)C(X) with XX compact Hausdorff, σ(f)=f(X)\sigma(f) = f(X), so f≥0f \ge 0 exactly when ff is real-valued with f(x)≥0f(x) \ge 0 for all xx. In Mn(ℂ)M_n(\C) the positive elements are the positive semidefinite matrices.

Non-example: a=(0100)a = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} in M2(ℂ)M_2(\C) has σ(a)={0}⊆[0,∞)\sigma(a) = \set{0} \subseteq [0, \infty), but a∗≠aa^* \ne a, so clause 1 fails. Also diag⁡(1,−1)\operatorname{diag}(1, -1) is self-adjoint but has −1-1 in its spectrum, so clause 2 fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
