Positive operator
Builds on Hilbert spaceHilbert space adjoint
Definition
Let be a Hilbert space over or and let be a bounded linear operator. The operator is positive when
- is self-adjoint, that is, , where is the adjoint of ;
- for all .
One writes , and for self-adjoint and when .
Remarks
Example: for every bounded operator on , the operator is positive. It is self-adjoint since , and .
Non-example: the diagonal operator on is self-adjoint, but for , so condition 2 fails.
Over , condition 2 alone implies condition 1, because a bounded operator with real for all is self-adjoint by polarization. Over , condition 1 is needed: a rotation by degrees of has for all but is not self-adjoint. Equivalent forms: is positive if and only if is self-adjoint with spectrum in , and if and only if for some bounded operator . Some authors call these operators positive semidefinite or nonnegative.
