Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Pn={0,1,…,n−1}P_n = \set{0, 1, \dots, n - 1}. The nn-element Post algebra is 𝐏n=(Pn,∨,∧,′,0,n−1)\mathbf{P}_n = (P_n, \vee, \wedge, ', 0, n - 1). Here x∨y=max⁡(x,y)x \vee y = \max(x, y), x∧y=min⁡(x,y)x \wedge y = \min(x, y), and x′=x+1x' = x + 1 for x<n−1x < n - 1 while (n−1)′=0(n - 1)' = 0. A Post algebra of order nn is an algebra in the variety generated by 𝐏n\mathbf{P}_n.

Remarks

Example: 𝐏n2\mathbf{P}_n^2 is a Post algebra of order nn, since a variety is closed under direct products. Non-example: the three-element chain ({0,1,2},max⁡,min⁡,′,0,2)(\set{0, 1, 2}, \max, \min, ', 0, 2) with x′=2−xx' = 2 - x is not a Post algebra of order 33. In 𝐏3\mathbf{P}_3 the identity x′′′≈xx''' \approx x holds, but here 0′′′=2≠00''' = 2 \ne 0. The algebra 𝐏n\mathbf{P}_n is primal, because max⁡\max and the cyclic negation already generate every operation on PnP_n, a result of Post. For n=2n = 2, 𝐏2\mathbf{P}_2 is the two-element Boolean algebra, so Post algebras of order 22 are Boolean algebras. Other texts present Post algebras through lattice axioms, as bounded distributive lattices with a chain of constants e0<e1<⋯<en−1e_0 < e_1 < \cdots < e_{n - 1}. Post algebras give algebraic semantics for Post's many-valued logic.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
