Power iteration
Definition
Let be an complex matrix and let be a nonzero starting vector. Power iteration is the sequence defined by as long as , together with the eigenvalue estimates .
Remarks
The numbers are Rayleigh quotients. Convergence: suppose is diagonalizable with eigenvalues , and has a nonzero component along an eigenvector for in the eigenbasis. Then the direction of tends to that of , up to a scalar factor of modulus , with error of order , and . Example: has eigenvalues and with eigenvectors and ; for , one gets , whose direction tends to with error of order . Non-example of convergence: for , the condition fails, and from the iterates alternate between the directions of and . Applying the method to gives inverse iteration, which finds the eigenvalue closest to a shift .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
