statement proposition

Power series of complex cosine

Statement

For each z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}, the series ∑n≥0(−1)nz2n/(2n)!\sum_{n \ge 0} (-1)^n z^{2n} / (2n)! converges absolutely, and cos⁡z=∑n=0∞(−1)nz2n(2n)!=1−z22!+z44!−⋯ ,\cos z = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} (-1)^n \frac{z^{2n}}{(2n)!} = 1 - \frac{z^2}{2!} + \frac{z^4}{4!} - \cdots, where cos⁡\cos is the complex cosine.

Remarks

Proof: put iziz and −iz-iz in the series of the complex exponential and add. The terms with odd powers cancel, and i2n=(−1)ni^{2n} = (-1)^n. In the same way, sin⁡z=∑n≥0(−1)nz2n+1/(2n+1)!\sin z = \sum_{n \ge 0} (-1)^n z^{2n+1} / (2n+1)! for each z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}. The series shows that cos⁡\cos is an even function: cos⁡(−z)=cos⁡z\cos(-z) = \cos z.

Explanations

L1 human

The series of cos⁡\cos has only the even powers of eze^z's series, with signs that alternate. For example, cos⁡(0.1)≈1−0.005=0.995\cos(0.1) \approx 1 - 0.005 = 0.995 from the first two terms.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
