Powerset construction
Builds on Nondeterministic finite automatonDeterministic finite automatonPower set
Statement
Let be a nondeterministic finite automaton. Let be the power set of . Define the deterministic finite automaton by Then . In particular, every language accepted by an NFA with states is accepted by a DFA with at most states.
Remarks
By induction on the length of , the state is exactly the set of states that can reach from by reading . So accepts if and only if some run of on ends in . In practice one builds only the subsets reachable from , which are often few. The bound cannot be improved in general. The language of words over whose -th letter from the end is has an NFA with states. But every DFA for it needs at least states, since it must remember the last letters. For an NFA with -moves, the same construction works after replacing each set by its -closure.

For a student
This theorem shows that nondeterminism adds no power to finite automata, unlike the open question for polynomial-time Turing machines. It is the standard way to prove that NFAs, -NFAs and DFAs all accept exactly the regular languages. Combined with the translation of regular expressions into -NFAs, it is how lexer generators and some search tools turn a pattern into a fast deterministic matcher. The resulting DFA can then be reduced by DFA minimization.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
