Definition
Let be a field. A (left) pre-Lie algebra over is a vector space over with a bilinear product such that for all .
Remarks
In terms of the associator , the condition says . A right pre-Lie algebra asks instead for symmetry in the last two arguments. In a pre-Lie algebra, the commutator is a Lie bracket, so a pre-Lie algebra is Lie-admissible.
Example: with , where is the derivative. Then , which is symmetric in and . Every associative algebra is pre-Lie, since its associator is zero.
Non-example: a Lie algebra with . Using the Jacobi identity, the difference of the two sides of the condition equals . For with and , take , , : the difference is when the characteristic of is not .
