Definition
Let be an algebraic signature. A class of -algebras is a prevariety if it satisfies these three conditions.
- If and is isomorphic to , then .
- If and is a subalgebra of , then .
- If is a family of members of , then the direct product is in ; for this product is the one-element algebra.
Remarks
In operator notation, is a prevariety exactly when , and is the prevariety generated by .
Example: residually finite groups form a prevariety. A subgroup of a residually finite group is residually finite, by restricting the finite quotients. A product of residually finite groups is residually finite. Indeed, a nontrivial element has a nontrivial coordinate. Compose the projection to that coordinate with a finite quotient that separates this coordinate from . This prevariety is not a quasivariety, since it is not closed under ultraproducts. A nonprincipal ultraproduct of the groups over the primes is a nontrivial torsion-free divisible abelian group, which has no proper subgroup of finite index.
Non-example: the class of fields fails condition 3, since has the zero divisor .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
