Prime decomposition of 3-manifolds

Builds on 3-manifoldConnected sumn-sphereOrientability

Statement

A closed connected 33-manifold PP is prime if PP is not homeomorphic to S3S^3 and the following holds. Whenever PP is homeomorphic to a connected sum A#BA \# B of closed 33-manifolds, one of AA and BB is homeomorphic to S3S^3.

Let MM be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold not homeomorphic to the 3-sphere S3S^3. Then:

  1. MM is homeomorphic to a connected sum P1#⋯#PkP_1 \# \cdots \# P_k of finitely many prime 33-manifolds.
  2. The summands are unique. If MM is also homeomorphic to Q1#⋯#QlQ_1 \# \cdots \# Q_l with each QjQ_j prime, then k=lk = l, and after reordering PiP_i is homeomorphic to QiQ_i for each ii.

Remarks

Existence is due to Kneser and uniqueness to Milnor. For existence, one cuts MM along embedded 22-spheres that do not bound balls and caps the pieces with balls; Kneser's finiteness argument shows that this process stops. Uniqueness comes from an innermost-disk argument that makes two systems of splitting spheres disjoint. A closed orientable prime 33-manifold is either S2×S1S^2 \times S^1 or irreducible, meaning that every embedded 22-sphere bounds an embedded 33-ball. For example, ℝℙ3#ℝℙ3\mathbb{RP}^3 \# \mathbb{RP}^3 has the two prime summands ℝℙ3\mathbb{RP}^3, and no other decomposition. Without orientability, uniqueness fails in this form: for a non-orientable PP, the sums P#(S2×S1)P \# (S^2 \times S^1) and P#(S2×~S1)P \# (S^2 \tilde{\times} S^1) are homeomorphic, where S2×~S1S^2 \tilde{\times} S^1 is the non-orientable S2S^2-bundle over the circle.

For a student

The theorem reduces the classification of closed orientable 33-manifolds to irreducible ones and S2×S1S^2 \times S^1. For irreducible manifolds, the next step is the JSJ decomposition along incompressible tori. These two decompositions are the first stages of the geometrization theorem. On the algebra side, the fundamental group of a connected sum is the free product of the fundamental groups of the summands.
