Primitive recursive function
Builds on Natural numbersFunction
Definition
The class of primitive recursive functions is the smallest class of functions , for , with the following properties.
- It contains the constant function of arity , and the successor function .
- It contains the projections for .
- It is closed under composition: if and are in the class, so is .
- It is closed under primitive recursion: if and are in the class, so is the function given below.
Here is the set of natural numbers.
Remarks
Example: addition is primitive recursive. Take and , which are in the class by clauses 1, 2 and 3. Clause 4 gives and , so . In the same way, multiplication, exponentiation, the factorial and truncated subtraction are primitive recursive.
Non-example: the Ackermann function is total and computable but not primitive recursive. Its diagonal eventually exceeds every unary function in the class.
A set or relation is primitive recursive when its characteristic function is.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
