Definition

Let GG be a Lie group and let MM be a smooth manifold. A principal GG-bundle over MM is a smooth fiber bundle π ⁣:P→M\pi \colon P \to M together with a smooth right action P×G→PP \times G \to P, (u,g)↦u⋅g(u, g) \mapsto u \cdot g, such that:

  1. the action preserves fibers: π(u⋅g)=π(u)\pi(u \cdot g) = \pi(u) for all u∈Pu \in P and g∈Gg \in G;
  2. every point of MM has an open neighbourhood UU and a diffeomorphism φ ⁣:π−1(U)→U×G\varphi \colon \pi^{-1}(U) \to U \times G with pr⁡1∘φ=π\operatorname{pr}_1 \circ \varphi = \pi and φ(u⋅g)=φ(u)⋅g\varphi(u \cdot g) = \varphi(u) \cdot g, where GG acts on U×GU \times G by (x,h)⋅g=(x,hg)(x, h) \cdot g = (x, hg).

Remarks

The product M×GM \times G with (x,h)⋅g=(x,hg)(x, h) \cdot g = (x, hg) is a principal GG-bundle, the trivial one. The map ℝ→S1\R \to S^1, t↦e2πitt \mapsto e^{2\pi i t}, with ℤ\Z acting by t⋅n=t+nt \cdot n = t + n, is a principal ℤ\Z-bundle. The Hopf map S3→S2S^3 \to S^2 is a principal U(1)U(1)-bundle.

Non-example: the circle group acts on S2S^2 by rotations about the vertical axis. This action preserves the fibers of the identity map S2→S2S^2 \to S^2, but these fibers are points, not copies of the circle. More generally, an action with a fixed point cannot be part of a principal bundle structure, because clause 2 forces GG to act freely.

Clause 2 implies that GG acts freely and transitively on each fiber. Conversely, for a free and proper smooth action of a Lie group GG on a manifold PP, the quotient map P→P/GP \to P/G is a principal GG-bundle. The same definition with topological groups and homeomorphisms gives topological principal bundles.
