Principle of mathematical induction for positive integers

Builds on Mathematical induction

Statement

For each positive integer nn, let SnS_n be a statement that is either true or false. Suppose that S1S_1 is true. Suppose also that for every positive integer kk, the truth of SkS_k forces the truth of Sk+1S_{k+1}. Then SnS_n is true for every positive integer nn.

Remarks

This is the form of induction that starts at 11. The proof of S1S_1 is the base case. The proof that SkS_k implies Sk+1S_{k+1} is the induction step, and the assumption SkS_k is the induction hypothesis.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
