Definition
Let be a thermodynamic system. A process function of is a quantity assigned to each process of , which may depend on the whole path of . It is called a process function when it is not the change of a state function. That is, there is no state function with for every process from to .
Remarks
The work done on a gas is a process function. For a quasistatic process in the plane, the work done on the gas is . Take the states and with and . The path that first expands at pressure and then raises the pressure gives . The path that first raises the pressure and then expands gives , which is different. Heat is also a process function. The change of internal energy is not a process function in this sense, because it equals . Infinitesimal process functions are written and to show that they are inexact differentials.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
