Product measure
Definition
Let and be measure spaces, and assume that and are σ-finite. Let be the product σ-algebra on . The product measure is the unique measure on with with the convention .
Remarks
Existence follows from Carathéodory's extension theorem applied to the rectangles, and uniqueness from σ-finiteness and the π-λ theorem. For one has , where and are the sections of .
Example: let and be Lebesgue measure on the Borel sets of . Then is two-dimensional Lebesgue measure on the Borel sets of : both measures give each rectangle its area, so they agree by uniqueness.
Non-example: let be the image of Lebesgue measure on under , a measure on the diagonal of . For and , , but . So is not .
Without σ-finiteness, uniqueness can fail. For Lebesgue measure on and counting measure on , there are different measures on the product σ-algebra with the rectangle property. The product of Lebesgue measures is often completed to give Lebesgue measure on .
