Definition
Let be a nonempty index set and, for each , let be a measurable space. Let be the Cartesian product, and let be the coordinate projections. The product σ-algebra is the σ-algebra on generated by the sets with and . Equivalently, it is the smallest σ-algebra on for which every is measurable.
Remarks
For two factors, is generated by the rectangles with and , since . For general , it is generated by the cylinder sets with finite.
Example: , where denotes the Borel σ-algebra. Each rectangle of Borel sets is Borel in , which gives one inclusion. Each open set of is a countable union of open rectangles with rational corners, which gives the other.
Non-example: let be the σ-algebra of Lebesgue measurable subsets of . Then is strictly smaller than the σ-algebra of Lebesgue measurable subsets of . For a non-measurable , the set is a Lebesgue null set in , but its section at is , and every set in has measurable sections.
A function is measurable for if and only if every coordinate is measurable.
