Definition
Let be a group, and let be the set of normal subgroups of finite index in . For give the finite quotient group the discrete topology. The profinite completion of is with the group law taken coordinatewise and the topology induced by the product topology. The map , , is the canonical homomorphism.
Remarks
is a profinite group, and is dense in . The kernel of is the intersection of all , so is injective if and only if is residually finite. Example: for , the finite-index subgroups are with , and ; by the Chinese remainder theorem it is isomorphic to . Here is injective, since . Non-example of injectivity: has no proper subgroup of finite index, so is trivial and is not injective. Universal property: every homomorphism from to a profinite group factors uniquely through by a continuous homomorphism .
