Definition

Let S=⨁d≥0SdS = \bigoplus_{d \ge 0} S_d be a commutative graded ring, and let S+=⨁d>0SdS_+ = \bigoplus_{d > 0} S_d. As a set, Proj⁡S\operatorname{Proj} S is the set of homogeneous prime ideals 𝔭\mathfrak{p} of SS with S+⊈𝔭S_+ \not\subseteq \mathfrak{p}. Its closed sets are the sets V+(𝔞)={𝔭∈Proj⁡S:𝔞⊆𝔭}V_+(\mathfrak{a}) = \set{\mathfrak{p} \in \operatorname{Proj} S : \mathfrak{a} \subseteq \mathfrak{p}} for homogeneous ideals 𝔞\mathfrak{a}. For a homogeneous f∈S+f \in S_+, let D+(f)={𝔭∈Proj⁡S:f∉𝔭}D_+(f) = \set{\mathfrak{p} \in \operatorname{Proj} S : f \notin \mathfrak{p}}. Let S(f)S_{(f)} be the ring of elements of degree 00 in the localization SfS_f, that is, the fractions a/fna / f^n with aa homogeneous of degree ndeg⁡fn \deg f.

The structure sheaf 𝒪\mathcal{O} on Proj⁡S\operatorname{Proj} S is the unique sheaf of rings such that, for every homogeneous f∈S+f \in S_+:

  1. 𝒪(D+(f))=S(f)\mathcal{O}(D_+(f)) = S_{(f)};
  2. (D+(f),𝒪∣D+(f))(D_+(f), \mathcal{O}|_{D_+(f)}) is isomorphic to the affine scheme Spec⁡S(f)\operatorname{Spec} S_{(f)}, by 𝔭↦𝔭Sf∩S(f)\mathfrak{p} \mapsto \mathfrak{p} S_f \cap S_{(f)}.

The sets D+(f)D_+(f) cover Proj⁡S\operatorname{Proj} S, so (Proj⁡S,𝒪)(\operatorname{Proj} S, \mathcal{O}) is a scheme.

Remarks

Example: for a ring AA, projective nn-space over AA is ℙAn=Proj⁡A[x0,…,xn]\mathbb{P}^n_A = \operatorname{Proj} A[x_0, \ldots, x_n], with deg⁡xi=1\deg x_i = 1. It is covered by the n+1n+1 affine pieces D+(xi)≅Spec⁡A[x0/xi,…,xn/xi]D_+(x_i) \cong \operatorname{Spec} A[x_0/x_i, \ldots, x_n/x_i]. Non-example: for S=k[x0,…,xn]S = k[x_0, \ldots, x_n] over a field kk, the ideal S+=(x0,…,xn)S_+ = (x_0, \ldots, x_n) is a homogeneous prime ideal. It is not a point of Proj⁡S\operatorname{Proj} S, since it contains S+S_+; it would correspond to the excluded origin of kn+1k^{n+1}. For a homogeneous polynomial FF in x0,…,xnx_0, \ldots, x_n, the scheme Proj⁡k[x0,…,xn]/(F)\operatorname{Proj} k[x_0, \ldots, x_n]/(F) is the projective hypersurface F=0F = 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
