Definition
Let be a measurable space, so that is a sigma-algebra of subsets of . Let be a complex Hilbert space with identity map . A projection-valued measure on is a map from to the bounded operators on such that:
- is an orthogonal projection for every ;
- and ;
- for all ;
- for all , the map is a complex measure on .
Remarks
Clause 4 is equivalent to the strong countable additivity: if with pairwise disjoint, then for every . By clause 3, the projections of disjoint sets have orthogonal images, and all commute. For each , is a positive measure of total mass . Example: let with orthonormal basis , let with its Borel sets, and let be real numbers. Let be the orthogonal projection onto the closed span of ; clauses 1 to 4 follow from the fact that . Non-example: on , let if and otherwise, for an orthogonal projection ; then , so clause 2 fails.
