Projective dimension

Definition
Let be a ring and let be a nonzero -module. The projective dimension is the least integer such that has a projective resolution of length . If no such finite resolution exists, then .
Remarks
One has if and only if is a projective module. Equivalently, if and only if for every -module , where is the Ext functor. Example: for ; the resolution has length , and is not projective, because projective -modules are free and hence have no nonzero torsion. Non-example of finiteness: over , the module has . Some authors set .
