Definition

Let ℋ\mathcal{H} be a complex Hilbert space with ℋ≠{0}\mathcal{H} \ne \set{0}. On ℋ∖{0}\mathcal{H} \setminus \set{0}, let ψ∼φ\psi \sim \varphi when φ=cψ\varphi = c\psi for some c∈ℂ∖{0}c \in \C \setminus \set{0}. The projective Hilbert space of ℋ\mathcal{H} is the quotient set 𝐏(ℋ)=(ℋ∖{0})/∼.\mathbf{P}(\mathcal{H}) = (\mathcal{H} \setminus \set{0}) / \sim. Its elements are the rays [ψ][\psi].

Remarks

Every ray contains unit vectors, and two unit vectors ψ,φ\psi, \varphi lie on the same ray if and only if φ=eiθψ\varphi = e^{i\theta}\psi for some θ∈ℝ\theta \in \R. So 𝐏(ℋ)\mathbf{P}(\mathcal{H}) is also the unit sphere of ℋ\mathcal{H} modulo multiplication by phases. It is the projective space of the vector space ℋ\mathcal{H}; for ℋ=ℂn+1\mathcal{H} = \C^{n+1} it is ℂℙn\mathbb{CP}^n.

Example: in ℂ2\C^2, the vectors (1,i)(1, i) and (i,−1)=i(1,i)(i, -1) = i(1, i) lie on the same ray.

Non-example: (1,0)(1, 0) and (0,1)(0, 1) lie on different rays, since (0,1)=c(1,0)(0, 1) = c(1, 0) would force 1=01 = 0. Also (1,1)(1, 1) and (1,−1)(1, -1) lie on different rays, although their entries have the same moduli: a relative phase between the components changes the ray, an overall phase does not.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
