Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an -module. The module is projective if it satisfies the following lifting property. Let , be -modules, a surjective -linear map, and an -linear map. Then there is an -linear map with .
Remarks
The following are equivalent for an -module :
- is projective.
- Every surjective linear map has a right inverse, that is, it splits.
- is a direct summand of a free module: there is a module with free.
- The functor takes exact sequences to exact sequences.
The same definition works over any ring, commutative or not.
Example: every free module with basis is projective. Given and , choose with and let ; then and agree on a basis, so they are equal. Over , the module is projective but not free, since as -modules.
Non-example: over , the module is not projective. Take the reduction and the identity of . A lift must be zero, because and has no nonzero element of order ; then .
