Definition
Let be a scheme and let be an integer. Let be projective space over , given by the Proj construction. Let be the fiber product, with projection . A morphism of schemes is projective if for some and some closed immersion .
Remarks
For a field and a homogeneous polynomial of positive degree, the curve is projective over . Indeed, is a closed immersion and is the projection . The affine line is not projective. A projective morphism is proper, and is not proper over . This is the definition in Hartshorne's textbook. In EGA the definition is more general: is a closed subscheme of the projective bundle of a quasi-coherent -module of finite type. The two definitions agree when is affine.
