Definition
Let be a ring and let be an -module. A projective resolution of is an exact sequence of -modules in which every is a projective module. It is a free resolution if every is a free module. It has length if and for all .
Remarks
Every module has a free resolution: take a free module mapping onto , then a free module mapping onto the kernel, and repeat. Example: over , the sequence is a free resolution of length , since multiplication by is injective and its image is the kernel of the reduction map. Over , the module has the free resolution , which never stops. Non-example: is not a resolution, because it is not exact at the middle . The kernel of the reduction is , but the image of multiplication by is . One often writes the resolution as the complex together with the map ; then and for .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
