Projective tensor product
Definition
Let and be Banach spaces over or , and let be their algebraic tensor product. For , let The infimum runs over all finite representations of . Then is a norm on , the projective norm. The projective tensor product is the completion of for .
Remarks
The norm is a cross norm: . The bound comes from the representation with one term. For , take functionals and of norm with and , given by the HahnβBanach theorem. For any representation, .
The infimum is needed: can be written as , with cost . A single representation does not give a well-defined number.
Universal property: bounded bilinear maps into a Banach space correspond to bounded linear maps with the same norm. In particular, the dual of is the space of bounded linear maps from to . For example, is isometric to .
