Statement

Let XX be a metric space and let ℳ\mathcal{M} be a set of Borel probability measures on XX. Call ℳ\mathcal{M} relatively compact if every sequence in ℳ\mathcal{M} has a subsequence that converges weakly to some Borel probability measure on XX.

  1. If ℳ\mathcal{M} is tight, then ℳ\mathcal{M} is relatively compact.
  2. If XX is separable and complete, and ℳ\mathcal{M} is relatively compact, then ℳ\mathcal{M} is tight.

Remarks

Tight means that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a compact set KK with μ(K)>1−ε\mu(K) > 1 - \varepsilon for all μ∈ℳ\mu \in \mathcal{M}. For a compact space XX, part 1 follows from the Riesz representation theorem and the weak-* compactness of the unit ball of the dual of C(X)C(X). The general case reduces to compact sets by tightness. For X=ℝX = \R, part 1 is close to Helly's selection theorem for distribution functions.

Example: the normal distributions N(m,σ2)N(m, \sigma^2) with ∣m∣≤1\abs{m} \le 1 and 0<σ≤10 < \sigma \le 1 form a tight family, using K=[−M,M]K = [-M, M] with MM large. So every sequence of them has a weakly convergent subsequence. The family of Dirac measures δn\delta_n, n∈ℕn \in \N, on ℝ\R is not tight, and no subsequence converges weakly. The mass escapes to infinity.

For a student

In probability, one proves convergence in distribution in two steps. First one shows tightness, which gives limit points by part 1. Then one shows that all limit points are the same measure, for example through characteristic functions or finite-dimensional distributions. This scheme proves Donsker's invariance principle for random walks. On a Polish space, the set of probability measures with the weak topology is itself a Polish space, metrized by the Lévy–Prokhorov metric.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
