Prony series

Builds on Relaxation modulus

Definition

A Prony series is a function G ⁣:[0,∞)→ℝG \colon [0, \infty) \to \R of the form G(t)=G∞+∑i=1nGie−t/τi,G(t) = G_\infty + \sum_{i=1}^n G_i e^{-t/\tau_i}, where n≥1n \ge 1, G∞≥0G_\infty \ge 0, each Gi>0G_i > 0, and the relaxation times τ1,…,τn>0\tau_1, \dots, \tau_n > 0 are distinct. In viscoelasticity it is used as a relaxation modulus, with G∞G_\infty the equilibrium modulus and G(0)=G∞+∑iGiG(0) = G_\infty + \sum_i G_i the instantaneous modulus.

Remarks

Example: the standard linear solid has G(t)=E∞+E1e−t/τG(t) = E_\infty + E_1 e^{-t/\tau}, a Prony series with n=1n = 1, G∞=E∞G_\infty = E_\infty and G1=E1G_1 = E_1. Non-example: the power law G(t)=Ct−αG(t) = C t^{-\alpha} with C>0C > 0 and 0<α<10 < \alpha < 1 is not a Prony series, because every Prony series is bounded near t=0t = 0 while t−αt^{-\alpha} is not. Such a power law is a continuous superposition of exponentials, t−α=1Γ(α)∫0∞uα−1e−ut dut^{-\alpha} = \frac{1}{\Gamma(\alpha)} \int_0^\infty u^{\alpha - 1} e^{-ut} \, du, and Prony series approximate it on a bounded range of times. In the Laplace domain, sG^(s)=G∞+∑iGiτis/(1+τis)s \hat G(s) = G_\infty + \sum_i G_i \tau_i s / (1 + \tau_i s).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
