Proof of induction on the integers
Builds on IntegersMathematical induction
Proof
We apply ordinary induction two times, once upward and once downward. Let be a property of integers that satisfies the three hypotheses.
- For each natural number , let be the claim " holds".
- holds, because holds. If holds, then holds by the second hypothesis, so holds.
- By induction, holds for every natural number .
- For each natural number , let be the claim " holds".
- holds, because and holds.
- If holds, then holds by the third hypothesis. Since , holds.
- By induction, holds for every natural number .
- Each integer is or for some natural number . So holds by step 3 or by step 7.
Idea
The integers are two copies of the natural numbers glued at : one going up and one going down. Ordinary induction covers each copy, starting from the shared base case .
