Proof of the anticommutativity of the cross product
Builds on Cross product
Proof
We compare the two vectors coordinate by coordinate.
- Let and . By the definition of the cross product, .
- The same definition with and exchanged gives .
- The first coordinate of is . This is the negative of the first coordinate of .
- The second coordinate of is . This is the negative of the second coordinate of .
- The third coordinate of is . This is the negative of the third coordinate of .
- Two vectors of are equal when their coordinates are equal. So steps 3 to 5 give .
Idea
Each coordinate of has the form , a difference of two products. Swapping the roles of and swaps the two products, and this changes the sign of the difference.
