Combinatorics Proof

Proof of the Catalan recurrence from the definition

Builds on Catalan numbers

Proof

  1. Let nn be a natural number.
  2. The node Catalan numbers defines the sequence (Cm)(C_m) by C0=1C_0 = 1 and, for every natural number mm, Cm+1=∑i=0mCi Cm−iC_{m+1} = \sum_{i=0}^{m} C_i\, C_{m-i}.
  3. Taking m=nm = n in this defining rule gives Cn+1=∑i=0nCi Cn−iC_{n+1} = \sum_{i=0}^{n} C_i\, C_{n-i}, which is the claim.

Idea

Here the Catalan numbers are defined by this recursion, so the recurrence is part of the definition. Its real content lies in the families that satisfy it, such as Dyck words and binary trees.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
