Proof

We build a basis of V×WV \times W from bases of VV and WW.

  1. Let n=dim⁡Vn = \dim V and m=dim⁡Wm = \dim W. Let (v1,…,vn)(v_1, \dots, v_n) be a basis of VV and (w1,…,wm)(w_1, \dots, w_m) a basis of WW.
  2. In the product V×WV \times W, consider the family ℱ\mathcal{F} of the n+mn + m vectors (v1,0),…,(vn,0),(0,w1),…,(0,wm)(v_1, 0), \dots, (v_n, 0), (0, w_1), \dots, (0, w_m).
  3. The family ℱ\mathcal{F} spans V×WV \times W. Let (v,w)∈V×W(v, w) \in V \times W. Since the bases span, v=∑i=1naiviv = \sum_{i=1}^n a_i v_i and w=∑j=1mcjwjw = \sum_{j=1}^m c_j w_j for some scalars ai,cj∈Fa_i, c_j \in F.
  4. By the componentwise operations of the product, ∑iai(vi,0)+∑jcj(0,wj)=(∑iaivi,∑jcjwj)=(v,w)\sum_i a_i (v_i, 0) + \sum_j c_j (0, w_j) = \left(\sum_i a_i v_i, \sum_j c_j w_j\right) = (v, w).
  5. The family ℱ\mathcal{F} is linearly independent. Suppose ∑iai(vi,0)+∑jcj(0,wj)=(0,0)\sum_i a_i (v_i, 0) + \sum_j c_j (0, w_j) = (0, 0) with ai,cj∈Fa_i, c_j \in F.
  6. By the computation of step 4, this says ∑iaivi=0\sum_i a_i v_i = 0 in VV and ∑jcjwj=0\sum_j c_j w_j = 0 in WW.
  7. The family (vi)(v_i) is linearly independent, so all ai=0a_i = 0. The family (wj)(w_j) is linearly independent, so all cj=0c_j = 0.
  8. By steps 3 to 7, ℱ\mathcal{F} is a basis of V×WV \times W. It is finite, so V×WV \times W is finite-dimensional.
  9. A basis of V×WV \times W has n+mn + m vectors, so dim⁡(V×W)=n+m=dim⁡V+dim⁡W\dim(V \times W) = n + m = \dim V + \dim W by the definition of dimension.

Idea

A pair (v,w)(v, w) splits as (v,0)+(0,w)(v, 0) + (0, w). So a basis of VV placed in the first slot, together with a basis of WW placed in the second slot, gives a basis of the product. The two bases do not interact, so their sizes add.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
