Proof of the Dirichlet convolution formula over ordered pairs
Builds on Dirichlet convolutionDivisors of a natural numberArithmetic function
Proof
- Let and be arithmetic functions and a positive integer. Let be the set of positive divisors of , and the set of ordered pairs of positive integers with .
- By the definition of the Dirichlet convolution, .
- For , the number is a positive integer and . So defines a map .
- For , the equation shows , and . So , and is surjective.
- If , then the first coordinates give . So is injective, hence a bijection.
- Reindexing the finite sum of step 2 along gives .
Idea
A divisor of and the pair carry the same information. So summing over divisors is the same as summing over the ordered factorizations .
